How to Survive Martial Law: A Guide to Staying Safe

What is Martial Law?

Before we dive into how to survive Martial Law, you have to understand what it is.
The Supreme Court hasn’t given us a full definition of what it entails, but Martial Law is the suspension of ordinary law, the Constitution, the Government and more. A military dictatorship replaces the rules during emergencies or civil unrest when the current government cannot perform their job.
Martial Law isn’t just a worry for America; it can happen anywhere in the world. It can happen for a variety of reasons, such as:
  • War
  • An EMP attack
  • A natural disaster such as a hurricane or Yellowstone erupting
  • A foreign invasion
  • Civil war

How to Survive Martial Law

Living under Martial Law is scary. The right to a fair trial is waved, and freedom of speech is gone. You can’t stop it from happening, which makes it feel even scarier. There are a few things you can do to survive Martial Law and gain control of your situation.

Stock Up Ahead of Time

Like any disaster scenario, it’s best to prepare ahead of time than during the situation. During Martial Law, store shelves will clear out in a heartbeat, and going to the store will be a scary job. You want to make sure you have plenty of food and water stocked up. Always have a minimum of 3 days’ worth of food stored, and you need one gallon of water per person per day.

Always Keep a Low Profile

What you don’t want is to become a target. Those who riot or are civilly disobedient are targets. During this time, preppers are vulnerable, and you need to keep a low profile at all times. Never call attention to yourself.
Never talk about your prepping. No one else needs to know what your family does or doesn’t have. Don’t dress in military-style clothing. Camouflage isn’t a good choice; save it for the wilderness. If you wear military clothing, you risk confrontation. Remember – low profile.

Listen, Don’t Talk

Freedom of speech is gone, so it’s best not to talk. Do more listening than talking. See what your neighbors or friends say, and hope that no one knows you’re a prepper. Lying in this situation is okay.

Trust No One

During Martial Law, people will try to impersonate military or law enforcement officers. Some might try to become the law. Preppers call this WROL post-disaster, which stands for Without The Rule of Law. It’s possible, so trust no one.
That also goes for friends and neighbors. They can quickly turn you in for things that you might say or do, so trust no one. These are scary times.

Know the Rules

Rules and laws change under Martial Law, so keep a tab on the current rules to avoid getting in trouble. Write them down or keep them in a notebook. Always pay attention to the rules that the authorities tell you, and understand that they can change during the chaos.
It can be hard to keep track of everything because you will receive different reports. Keep track of who said what will help.

Pretend You Have Nothing

Hopefully, as a prepper, you have enough water and food supplies in your cabinet, but you can’t let anyone else know you have these stockpiles. You have less reason to head onto the streets, but you need to play the part. Remember – low profile. People will notice that you, somehow, can never leave your house and they’ll ask questions.
Check out what your neighbors do and do that. Go to the local grocery store and pick up bread and other groceries.
If you do need to pick up supplies, try to avoid large stores like Walmart. Make sure you have cash on hand because ATM and credit card machines might crash.

Avoid “Camps”

Avoid getting stuck in camps or large shelters with hundreds or thousands of people. These situations can quickly spiral out of control. You’re opening yourself up to a dangerous scenario, and people are likely to react violently. Bringing your family into these locations is rarely a good thing, and the military can force you to stay once you’re inside.

Decide If You Should Stay or Go

One of the most important things to decide is if you should stay where you are or go. Typically, the safest place for your family is inside of your house without lights on, but what if you can’t stay there. You don’t want to run out of food or water under Martial Law.
Whatever you do, don’t make plans late. The military and National Guard are trained to respond quickly and in a calculated way. Figure out how long you can stay in a spot and pick a backup location just in case you need to bug out. Be prepared to leave if needed. You don’t have to die for your home.

Safety in Numbers

The last thing you need to survive Martial Law is to have some community. Even if you don’t have weapons, you’re always safer in a group. You need people that you can count on to protect you. It makes you safer when facing troops or law enforcement. However, make sure you pick the right group and be wary of groups who make poor choices. Leave them behind fast – especially when survival is on the line during a SHTF scenario. Full text - How to Survive Martial Law: A Guide to Staying Safe

Edward Snowden. Permanent Record

Permanent Record. Edward Snowden
Edward Snowden’s revelations about the extent of US surveillance operations sent shockwaves around the world, the effects of which are still being felt today. In Permanent Record, the whistle-blower gives his side of the story, as well as detailing his personal background and the reasoning behind his actions. Edward Snowden, the man who risked everything to expose the US government’s system of mass surveillance, reveals for the first time the story of his life, including how he helped to build that system and what motivated him to try to bring it down. In 2013, twenty-nine-year-old Edward Snowden shocked the world when he broke with the American intelligence establishment and revealed that the United States government was secretly pursuing the means to collect every single phone call, text message, and email. The result would be an unprecedented system of mass surveillance with the ability to pry into the private lives of every person on earth. Six years later, Snowden reveals for the very first time how he helped to build this system and why he was moved to expose it. Spanning the bucolic Beltway suburbs of his childhood and the clandestine CIA and NSA postings of his adulthood, Permanent Record is the extraordinary account of a bright young man who grew up online – a man who became a spy, a whistleblower, and, in exile, the Internet’s conscience. Written with wit, grace, passion, and an unflinching candor, Permanent Record is a crucial memoir of our digital age and destined to be a classic.

... The fact is, no one with a biography like mine ever comes comfortably to autobiography. It’s hard to have spent so much of my life trying to avoid identification, only to turn around completely and share “personal disclosures” in a book. The Intelligence Community tries to inculcate in its workers a baseline anonymity, a sort of blank-page personality upon which to inscribe secrecy and the art of imposture. You train yourself to be inconspicuous, to look and sound like others. You live in the most ordinary house, you drive the most ordinary car, you wear the same ordinary clothes as everyone else. The difference is, you do it on purpose: normalcy, the ordinary, is your cover. This is the perverse reward of a self-denying career that brings no public glory: the private glory comes not during work, but after, when you can go back out among other people again and successfully convince them that you’re one of them. Though there are a score of more popular and surely more accurate psychological terms for this type of identity split, I tend to think of it as human encryption. As in any process of encryption, the original material—your core identity—still exists, but only in a locked and scrambled form. The equation that enables this ciphering is a simple proportion: the more you know about others, the less you know about yourself. After a time, you might forget your likes and even your dislikes. You can lose your politics, along with any and all respect for the political process that you might have had. Everything gets subsumed by the job, which begins with a denial of character and ends with a denial of conscience. “Mission First.” Some version of the above served me for years as an explanation of my dedication to privacy, and my inability or unwillingness to get personal. It’s only now, when I’ve been out of the IC almost as long as I was in it, that I realize: it isn’t nearly enough. After all, I was hardly a spy—I wasn’t even shaving—when I failed to turn in my English class assignment. Instead, I was a kid who’d been practicing spycraft for a while already—partly through my online experiments with game-playing identities, but more than anything through dealing with the silence and lies that followed my parents’ divorce. ... In the Intelligence Community, the “Frankenstein effect” is widely cited, though the more popular military term for it is “blowback”: situations in which policy decisions intended to advance American interests end up harming them irreparably. Prominent examples of the “Frankenstein effect” cited by after-the-fact civilian, governmental, military, and even IC assessments have included America’s funding and training of the mujahideen to fight the Soviets, which resulted in the radicalization of Osama bin Laden and the founding of al-Qaeda, as well as the de-Baathification of the Saddam Hussein–era Iraqi military, which resulted in the rise of the Islamic state. ... The CIA is the primary American intelligence agency dedicated to HUMINT (human intelligence), or covert intelligence gathering by means of interpersonal contact—person to person, face-to-face, unmediated by a screen. The COs (case officers) who specialized in this were terminal cynics, charming liars who smoked, drank, and harbored deep resentment toward the rise of SIGINT (signals intelligence), or covert intelligence gathering by means of intercepted communications, which with each passing year reduced their privilege and prestige.
Nothing is harder than living with a secret that can’t be spoken. Lying to strangers about a cover identity or concealing the fact that your office is under the world’s most top-secret pineapple field might sound like it qualifies, but at least you’re part of a team: though your work may be secret, it’s a shared secret, and therefore a shared burden. There is misery but also laughter. When you have a real secret, though, that you can’t share with anyone, even the laughter is a lie. I could talk about my concerns, but never about where they were leading me. To the day I die I’ll remember explaining to my colleagues how our work was being applied to violate the oaths we had sworn to uphold and their verbal shrug in response: “What can you do about it?” I hated that question, its sense of resignation, its sense of defeat, but it still felt valid enough that I had to ask myself, “Well, what?”

How to Set Up an Ultralight Tarp Shelter for Backpacking

...
Tarp shelters have the following features:
  • Grommets for pole tips at the middle of each side of the tarp
  • Sturdy reinforced loops at the corners and along the edges to allow you to stake them down or attach and stake down guylines (or attach those guylines to objects like trees)
  • Some tarps might also have extra loops to add guylines in strong winds
  • Some tarps might also have loops along the centerline at the top of the tarp to let you set up a ridgeline

Tarp Shelter Setup Supplies

Tarp shelters vary a little in what comes with them, but your basic supply needs are few:

The tarp: Many are square, which works for the setups in this article; sizes and shapes vary—backpacking tarps are in the 9’ x 9’ range and weigh one pound (or a bit more).

Guylines: Typically included; some are pre-attached and/or might have tensioners or cleats built in for setup ease. All you really need is some cord and knot knowledge, though.

Additional cord: Typically not included, this lets you create a ridgeline, add extra guylines or extend guylines.

Stakes: Most, but not all shelters, include them; you might also want to bring along an extra stake or two to give you more setup options and in case you lose or break one.

Poles: Most shelters are designed to work with trekking poles (not included), though a few might come with their own shelter poles.

Three Knots to Know

...
The bowline: For securing a guyline to a guyout loop or a tree trunk. (See our video tutorial)

The trucker’s hitch: For securing—and tensioning—a guyline to a stake or a tree trunk. (See our video tutorial)

The prusik: Allows you to adjust tautness by sliding the hitch freely until it is held in place by tension; used for securing the front and rear edges of a tarp along a ridgeline. (See our video tutorial)

A-Frame Setup

This classic tarp setup with the corners attached to the ground should give you enough space for two people to sleep under it.
A Frame Tarp Setup
Here’s how to set up a ridgeline for your tarp shelter:
  1. Run a cord through the top loops along the centerline of the tarp (or underneath along the length of the tarp if it has no top loops).
  2. Tie a bowline knot around one tree.
  3. Tie a trucker's hitch to the tree on the other side (to tighten the ridgeline).
  4. Tie a prusik knot so that it goes through the front pole grommet and around the ridgeline; do the same at the rear pole grommet.
  5. Slide each prusik knot along the ridgeline until the tarp is taut along that line.
  6. Stake and tension the corners and sides of your tarp shelter.
...

Closed-End A-Frame Setup

This alternative to the classic A-frame gives you a little more protection from wind and rain. The back end is essentially closed, so wind and wind-driven rain can’t blow in from that side.
A Frame with Ridgeline Tarp Setup

Closed-End A-Frame Setup

This alternative to the classic A-frame gives you a little more protection from wind and rain. The back end is essentially closed, so wind and wind-driven rain can’t blow in from that side.
A Closed-End A-Frame Tarp Setup
Here’s how to set up your tarp shelter as a closed-end A-frame:
  1. Stake down the middle point at what will become the back of the shelter.
  2. Put your trekking pole at the front (angled slightly), then stake down and lightly tension its guyline to hold the pole in place.
  3. Stake down the front two corners.
  4. Stake down the back two corners.
...

Wind-Shed Setup

As the name implies, this is really good for protection when the prevailing wind is coming from a particular direction. It’s also good if you're backpacking somewhere warm and you want to maximize your view of a nearby lake or mountain.
Wind-Shed Tarp Setup
Here’s how to set up your tarp shelter as a wind shed:
  1. Stake down one side of the tarp.
  2. Put a trekking pole (angled slightly) in the middle of an adjacent side of the tarp; then stake down and tension the pole’s guyline (at about a 90° angle from that side of the tarp).
  3. Put the other trekking pole (angled slightly toward the front of the shed) in the middle of the side of the tarp that’s opposite the staked-down side; then stake down and lightly tension the pole’s guyline (at about a 90° angle from the guyline holding the other pole).
  4. Stake down the corner near that pole and stake down that side of the tarp.
  5. Add a short guyline to the remaining corner on the tarp (at about a 90° angle from the guyline in Step 3), then stake that guyline down and tension the line.
...

C-Fly Setup

Much like the wind shed, this offers open views, as well as protection when the prevailing wind is coming from a particular direction. It also offers the added benefit of providing a ground sheet to protect your sleeping setup from soggy soil.
C-Fly Tarp Setup
Here’s how to set your tarp shelter up as a C-fly:
Note that this setup requires a minimum of eight stakes.
  1. Stake down what will be the corners on your rectangular ground sheet section (as shown in the illustration above).
  2. Place a trekking pole to support one side of what will become the ridgeline; add a guyline to that front corner of the tarp (at a 90° angle from the ridgeline); then stake down and tension that guyline.
  3. Place the other trekking pole to support the other side of the ridgeline and repeat Step 2.
  4. Tension (retension) guylines until your shelter is taut; for added stability, you can also add an additional guyline on each side coming out from the top of the pole (at a 90° angle from that side of the C-fly).

Survival Knives: How to Choose and Use the Right Blade. James Morgan Ayres

Survival Knives: How to Choose and Use the Right Blade. James Morgan Ayres
Some survival guides explain the basics of how to make primitive tools. But do you know how to actually successful hunt with spear, throwing stick, bola, or primitive bow? Making tools that you do not know how to hunt with will not get you to meat. If you’re hunting with primitive weapons, especially crude survival weapons you’ve made in the field under actual survival conditions, you must adapt your strategy to the weapons available or go hungry. Author James M. Ayres grew up in the Midwest hunting squirrels, rabbits, and other small game with bows, spears, atlatls, and bolas he made myself. He has hunted with bow, spear, net, and other primitive weapons with the Lacandon in Yucatán, the Igorots in the Philippines, the K’iche’ in Guatemala, the Sasak in Indonesia, and others. In Survival Knives, he shares his knowledge so you, too, can survive using such tools and weapons. It’s not enough to have a knife and know how to make basic hunting weapons. That’s craftsmanship — not survival. Nor is it enough simply to have a knife when trapped in an emergency situation, like a collapsed building. You need to know how to conserve your knife and use it properly to escape so that it will not break and you are not injured. Learn how to use survival knives, and how to use the tools and weapons you can make with the knife — not only in wilderness, but also in urban areas, foreign countries, and disaster zones such as earthquakes, floods, fires, and civil insurrections.

Debunking the myth about pillars in forest districts oriented with edges strictly to the north
